The 2024 Guide to Barranco, Lima (Peru)

INTRODUCTION
Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital, is a sprawling city of contrasts, home to over 11 million residents. Beneath its historic facades and celebrated dining scene, the city pulses with energy—bustling markets, lively streets, and colorful neighborhoods.
On my most recent visit, I spent three days in Lima as a stopover before embarking on a 7-day lodge-to-lodge trek to Machu Picchu. Having previously experienced the intensity of this vast metropolis, I was determined to enjoy a more intimate side of the city this time. For that reason, I chose to spend most of my stay in Barranco, my favorite neighborhood from past travels.
WHY BARRANCO?
Many visitors to Lima choose to stay in the upscale, polished Miraflores district, which sits right beside the more eclectic Barranco district. While they are neighbors, staying in Barranco versus Miraflores offers two distinct urban experiences.
Barranco is celebrated for its bohemian charm—a vibrant, artistic neighborhood with a laid-back atmosphere. It’s brimming with colorful street art, galleries, trendy cafés, boutique clothing stores, and award-winning restaurants, all set against a backdrop of historical architecture and ocean views.
Miraflores, by contrast, is a polished, cosmopolitan district known for its upscale hotels, shopping centers, and manicured parks. It offers a modern and luxurious vibe, with international dining, high-end boutiques, and stunning coastal cliffs. While Miraflores appeals to those seeking convenience and sophistication, Barranco is perfect for travelers drawn to a relaxed, creative atmosphere with a local touch.
For me, it’s all about the vibe. I love small boutique hotels, charming shops filled with goods from local designers, and owner-run restaurants. I’m also willing to forgo certain amenities to enjoy this kind of experience. However, if you prefer a hotel with extensive creature comforts—like a large pool, a gym, or multiple dining options—and world-class shopping just steps away, Miraflores might be a better fit.
But what if you could have the best of both?
One of the perks of these two neighborhoods is their proximity. It’s easy to experience both in a single trip. For example, my daughter and I walked the Malécon from Barranco to Miraflores one day on our way to dinner. Alternatively, a taxi or Uber takes only about 15 minutes.

THE 10 BEST THINGS TO DO IN BARRANCO

Known for its vibrant atmosphere, Barranco is a favorite for art lovers, food enthusiasts, and those eager to experience Lima’s unique creative spirit.
1. BEAUTIFUL BARRANCO HOTELS
While I wouldn’t normally include hotels in a things to do section, Barranco’s stunning boutique hotels are truly part of the experience. As a former seaside escape for the wealthy and influential, many of these graceful properties are located in beautifully restored mansions. Staying in one of them allows you to feel immersed in a unique piece of Lima’s history.
It’s worth noting that Barranco boutique hotels often have a boutique number of rooms, and they tend to sell out quite quickly. (On my most recent visit, my daughter and I had to split our stay between two hotels.)
HOTEL B (4 ★) – Housed in a beautifully restored 1914 Belle Époque mansion, Hotel B blends luxury and artistic charm in the heart of Barranco. Featuring curated art collections, elegant rooms, an acclaimed restaurant, and a rooftop terrace with stunning Pacific Ocean views, this hotel is a true reflection of Barranco’s cultural essence. Hotel B is perfect for couples and solo travelers but also caters to families with their spacious two-bedroom lock-off suites.
Insider Tip – Even if you’re not staying at Hotel B, be sure to stop by to check out their boutique gallery (B-Art), enjoy dinner, or sip on a cocktail. It’s a fantastic spot to soak in the neighborhood’s ambiance.
VILLA BARRANCO (BY ANANAY) – Family-run with a touch of understated luxury, Villa Barranco is housed in a pair of beautifully restored mirror-image mansions from 1916, seamlessly blending historic charm with modern comforts. The property features uniquely designed rooms, a welcoming ambiance, and a rooftop terrace perfect for sunset viewing. Its commitment to personalized service and attention to detail makes it an ideal choice for travelers seeking a relaxed and authentic experience in Lima. (Check rates on Booking.com.)
My teen daughter and I loved our stay at Villa Barranco so much that we decided to switch our Cusco hotel to another property in their portfolio, the Ananay Hotel Palacio Manco Capac. Though I admit, the promise of alpacas outside our bedroom window may have also played a part!)

Note: I didn’t have the best experience when trying to book a Wynwood property in Barranco. (Wynwood manages a variety of apartments and villas for short- and long-term stays.) While this may have been an isolated incident, I’d recommend reading reviews thoroughly before making a booking with them.

2. BARRANCO MUSEUMS
Barranco is a cultural hotspot, offering a glimpse into Peru’s artistic heritage through its diverse museums. From traditional art to contemporary works, these spaces highlight the neighborhood’s creative spirit.
Here are four must-visit Barranco museums:
MUSEO DE ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO (THE MAC) – As Lima’s only museum dedicated exclusively to contemporary art, MAC Lima showcases works by both Peruvian and international artists. The museum’s sleek, modern architecture and rotating exhibitions make it a dynamic cultural space.
Insider Tip: The MAC is located in a fenced park with a charming crèpe cafe on the grounds. In such a bustling city, it’s a nice respite from the crowds and traffic.
JADE RIVERA MUSEUM – Lima’s streets are alive with the vibrant murals of internationally acclaimed Peruvian artist Jade Rivera, who is known for his unique blend of human figures and natural elements that explore Peruvian culture. His museum offers an intimate view of his murals, paintings, and installations, highlighting social themes and cultural roots.
MUSEO PEDRO DE OSMA – Housed in a stunning 19th-century mansion, this museum features an extensive collection of Peruvian art from the 16th to 18th centuries, including paintings, sculptures, and silverware.
CASA TALLER VICTOR DELFÍN – Discover the home and studio of renowned Peruvian artist Víctor Delfín, known for his iconic sculpture “El Beso” in Miraflores. According to local tradition, if you make a wish while holding your breath and crossing the bridge, it may come true.

Below it lies the Bajada de los Baños, a charming pedestrian walkway lined with boutiques, galleries, cafés, bars, and restaurants that winds from the heart of Barranco down to the Pacific Ocean. This area is a must-see destination any day of the week, but weekends are the liveliest as local musicians, street artists, and vendors contribute to its vibrant atmosphere.

Barranco is home to numerous exceptional boutiques that showcase the city’s rich culture and craftsmanship. Here are some must-visit spots:
UNØ: Focusing on contemporary Peruvian fashion and design, Uno features local designers and offers a curated mix of clothing and accessories that reflect Peru’s urban, modern aesthetic.
DÉDALO ARTE Y ARTSANÍA: Housed in a historic mansion, Dédalo offers a curated selection of high-quality Peruvian artisan crafts, including jewelry, textiles, ceramics, and home décor. It’s an ideal place to find unique, handcrafted souvenirs. It also has a lovely cafe in the back.
NEO CONCEPT STORE: A chic shop featuring contemporary Peruvian designers, Neo Concept Store offers a curated selection of clothing and accessories with a modern, minimalist touch. It’s perfect for discovering pieces that reflect Lima’s urban vibe.
CUATRO EN UN BAÚL: A hidden gem that combines vintage and contemporary styles, Cuatro en un Baúl offers an array of curated clothing, accessories, and decor items.
B_ART: Located in the elegant Hotel B, B_Art is a boutique that combines art and fashion, featuring a mix of Peruvian and international designers. Its selection includes beautifully crafted clothing and accessories that reflect Barranco’s artistic spirit.
EL CACAOTAL: An edible library dedicated to fine Peruvian chocolate, El Cacaotal showcases the work of various Peruvian chocolatiers and the unique flavors of Peruvian cacao. Visitors can learn about the origins of cacao in each bar, how flavors vary by region, and the stories of the producers behind each bar.
PUNA: An eclectic store that combines art, design, and fashion, Puna’s selection includes handcrafted furniture, home décor, and bold accessories. It’s perfect for those looking to add unique statement pieces to their collection.

Barranco offers a variety of markets that reflect its artistic and cultural vibrancy. As you wander the streets, especially on a weekend, you’re almost guaranteed to stumble across one.
BARRANCO ARTS AND CRAFTS MARKET (LA FERIA) – Situated just a street away from Barranco’s main square, La Feria operates on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The market hosts stalls offering homemade products including clothing, art, and a variety of delectable food options. (Jiron Unión 108)
THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS – If you’re strolling around the Puente de los Suspiros area on a weekend, you’ll find the cobblestone path below lined with market stalls. There are also plenty of art galleries and boutiques nearby to explore.
FERIA ECOLÓGICA DE BARRANCO – Each Sunday, the Barranco Organic Market draws locals and visitors with its selection of fresh organic produce and artisanal products. 6. WALKS IN BARRANCO
Barranco is a wonderful neighborhood to explore on foot. Every block offers something special, whether it’s a vibrant mural, a charming boutique, or a cozy café.

Another option to consider is ToursbyLocals, a company I’ve used in several cities (though not yet in Lima). What I appreciate about them is that you can read reviews for individual guides, giving you a better sense of the experience you’ll have.
7. BARRANCO RESTAURANTS
In such a populous city, it’s amazing that you can simply stroll down a block in the Lima’s Barranco district and stumble upon numerous world-class restaurants. Here are some top recommendations:
CENTRAL – A must-visit, internationally acclaimed restaurant that highlights Peru’s biodiversity across various altitudes with innovative dishes. Reservations open approximately six months in advance, so be sure to plan ahead.
KJOLLE – Run by Chef Pía León, co-founder of Central, Kjolle offers vibrant, ingredient-driven dishes with an emphasis on Peru’s natural ingredients, presented with artistic flair.
B RESTAURANT – Located within the elegant Hotel B, this restaurant combines Peruvian and Mediterranean influences, delivering beautifully crafted dishes that capture Barranco’s artistic spirit.
ISOLINA TABERNA – For a more traditional experience, Isolina serves classic, hearty Peruvian comfort food in a rustic setting. Favorites like lomo saltado and arroz con pato are perfect for sharing.
AWICHA – This cozy spot offers a relaxed atmosphere and a menu that blends Peruvian flavors with seasonal ingredients, resulting in dishes that feel both familiar and inventive.
SIETE – A stylish restaurant where modern Peruvian cuisine meets innovative twists. Siete’s ambiance and menu provide the perfect balance of tradition and creativity, making it an ideal spot to relax after exploring Barranco’s boutiques and galleries.
Each of these restaurants offers a unique taste of Peru’s culinary diversity, making Barranco a destination for food lovers.
Insider Tip: Reservations for some of these restaurants, like Central (which books out months in advance), can be tricky. Check each restaurant’s website for availability and details. Also, note that many restaurants are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
8. BARRANCO COCKTAIL BARS
Barranco offers a vibrant cocktail scene that blends history, artistry, and local flavor. Here are some top spots to enjoy a drink:
AYAHUASCA RESTOBAR – Housed in a beautifully restored historic mansion, Ayahuasca Restobar is a Barranco icon. Its colorful interiors and cozy nooks create a vibrant atmosphere. Signature cocktails, like the Coca Sour and passion fruit-infused Pisco Sour, showcase Peruvian ingredients.
HOTEL B – This luxurious boutique hotel features two elegant bars. Bar B, on the ground floor is led by award-winning mixologist Axel Romero, renowned for crafting innovative cocktails. The Rooftop is Barranco’s best spot to watch the sunset over the Pacific
JUANITO DE BARRANCO – This historic tavern is celebrated for its smoked ham sandwiches, pisco sours, and authentic Peruvian ambiance. With over 80 years of history, it is a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike.
9. CAFÉ AND DULCES
Barranco is full of delightful spots to satisfy your cravings for coffee, pastries, and sweet treats. My daughter and I enjoyed these places so much that we often found ourselves popping into one mid-morning for a kind of second breakfast. Here are some standout options:
ALANYA – This charming café offers croissants and pastries so perfectly made that customers swear they are straight out of France. Pair them with a cappuccino for a truly indulgent experience.
CASA LOLO – Known for its warm atmosphere and attention to detail, Casa Lolo serves exceptional coffee and a variety of desserts that are as beautiful as they are delicious.
CICLOS CAFÉ – Nestled downstairs from the chocolate boutique El Cacaotal, this cozy spot is ideal for an expertly-brewed coffee while exploring Barranco.
BLU GELATERIA – This artisanal gelato shop is a must-visit for its creamy, handmade creations featuring flavors like lucuma, chocolate, and tropical maracuya. Perfect for a sunny afternoon treat.
LA PANETTERIA – A bakery that locals love for its freshly baked bread and pastries. It’s a great stop for a quick breakfast or to pick up something delicious to enjoy later.
10. BEYOND BARRANCO
If you have extra time on your hands are are still wondering what to do in Barranco, Lima, you may want to look at some other excursions. Here are a few must-visit spots to explore beyond this vibrant neighborhood:
LARCO MUSEUM – Located in Pueblo Libre, this museum is a treasure trove of pre-Columbian artifacts, including its famous collection of ancient ceramics. It’s the perfect complement to a trip to Machu Picchu, whether you’re heading there or have just returned. (Try hard not to giggle at the erotic ceramics section below the restaurant!)
Insider Tip: The restaurant Cafe del Museo Larco is a lovely place to enjoy lunch before or after your museum visit, serving delicious Peruvian cuisine in a very beautiful garden setting.
MIRAFLORES – Stroll along the picturesque Malecón, a cliffside park with breathtaking ocean views. Don’t miss the iconic Parque del Amor (Love Park) and paragliding for the adventurous.
HUACA PUCLLANA – Discover Lima’s ancient history at this pre-Inca adobe pyramid, located right in the middle of Miraflores. Guided tours provide fascinating insights into the site’s history and cultural significance.
DAY TRIPS FROM LIMA – If you have even more time, there are some unforgettable day trips that can be done from Lima. Head south to Paracas and the Ballestas Islands, often called the “Galápagos of Peru,” where you can spot sea lions, penguins, and a variety of seabirds. Adventure seekers can visit the nearby Huacachina Oasis to sandboard down massive dunes or take a thrilling dune buggy ride. For a truly unique experience, consider a flight over the Nazca Lines—massive, ancient geoglyphs etched into the desert whose origins and purpose remain a mystery.

IS LIMA SAFE?
I don’t want to sugarcoat this—Lima does face crime issues that can affect tourists, including incidents of pickpocketing and, in rare cases, armed robbery. While my daughter and I generally felt safe walking around Barranco and Miraflores, we did take some precautions. This included leaving our valuables in the hotel safe (including passports) and being very careful when pulling out our cell phones in public. (Generally only doing so inside a store, not on the street.)
We also only walked around during the daytime, opting for Ubers at night or for any destination that wasn’t close by. (I feel more comfortable with Ubers because of the tracking software.) Additionally, we booked a car service to take us from Lima airport to Barranco upon arrival. Driving in Lima can be chaotic, and after a red-eye flight, I wanted to ensure we had a comfortable, safe ride.
